It is a common notion people have that they are part of a group that is better than another group. Perhaps better is not the correct word to use here. So let’s use the word ‘right’ instead. Our group is right, we say, and others are wrong. Then we go farther and say that if they are wrong they should be persecuted for their wrongness in order to make them see the light. But such divisions are false.
Let me make a confession. I act this way too. There are groups of people out there to whom my first reaction is anger, hatred even. Without knowing the first thing about the person, if I see them I get my back up and feel a bit angry. Now I am aware of this, and I keep it in line and I tell that little voice inside myself to shut the hell up and sit down. Who are these people for me? Steelers fans.
I like the Bengals. I watch their football matches on occasion, though I am not a diehard fan. But, my point is that because of a simple sports rivalry there are people I react to in a bad way based only on the logo on their shirt.
